Team Budget Report: Update the Educational Sitepackage Extension and Tutorial

This is a report about the implementation of the documentation team budget idea: Update the Sitepackage Extension and Tutorial for TYPO3 v14.

In Budget Idea round one of 2026 the community voted to update the
Educational Sitepackage Extension and the Tutorial. undkonsorten, specifically myself, was awarded the contract by the Documentation Team to carry out the whole project. I found it an exciting task and was keen to get on with it. So I was naturally delighted when I received the news that I could get started.

A New Challenge

It is my first major contribution to the TYPO3 project that I had to implement on my own. I wasn't worried, mind you, but it was certainly an unusual task. After all, many new TYPO3 users rely on the code examples in the documentation. And such a site package is, of course, a central and important extension in a TYPO3 installation.

Getting Up to Speed

Lina Wolf started by giving me an overview of the various repositories and how the whole thing works together. I was already familiar with the TYPO3 changelogs, but I didn’t know, for example, that a GitHub issue is automatically created for each changelog so that the documentation can be updated accordingly; and so that it isn’t forgotten.

Incidentally, this is where you can help ensure that all changes in TYPO3 14 are also incorporated into the documentation. For anyone who’d like to have a look, see the documentation changelog issues on Github.

Keeping Changes Manageable

To ensure the Documentation Team could review my changes quickly and easily, the pull requests always had to be clear, well-organized and kept short. I was already familiar with a similar approach from my participation in the Best Practices Team remote sprints.

From Code to Documentation

The first adjustments were, of course, made in the Code Extension. As the feature freeze for version 14 didn’t start until the end of March, I began working on the documentation in April.

Of course, there were new screenshots too. You all know that’s a tricky part in TYPO3 documentation. But it's also very time-consuming. All screenshots had to be taken manually as there is no automated process for this.

Changes by Numbers

Finally, a few figures for the statistics:

  • Changes on the site package extension:
    Commits: 16 | Lines added: 38 | Lines deleted: 94 | Net lines: -56 | Total lines changed: 132
  • Changes in the documentation of the site package:
    Commits: 15 | Lines added: 272 | Lines deleted: 307 | Net lines: -35 | Total lines changed: 579

Done!

Not quite in time for the TYPO3 14 launch, but close enough and well within the deadline, I finally completed the task at the end of April.

There is now a new version of the Tutorial Site Package optimized for TYPO3 14, including updated documentation.

This Tutorial Site Package not only runs on the latest version of TYPO3, but also makes use of the new features in TYPO3 14.

I hope this helps TYPO3 newbies to manage the system quickly and assists others in updating their own site packages to TYPO3 14.
